The Beginning
This is the story of me, a non-medico, deciding to work on an AI mental health assessment tool. Because of my compelling mental health issues, I was admitted to a mental health care institute for a brief period. I have written about that in my previous blogs. It’s India, and we all know how our society views the mental health care support system. Especially when a woman gets herself into an MHI, it’s often an eww moment for people.
But surprisingly, in my case, I was the one who recognised that my life was not like that of others. My brain functioned in an absolutely different way, and it could be better. So it was my choice. Yet, being so accustomed to the stereotypical viewpoints of our society, I worried about how it would all end up. I even chose to hide my admission from my mother, knowing she would never understand.
The Turning Point
Going in was the easiest part, as I realised soon after being admitted. You have to work very hard to change long-practised routines. It takes time and effort, especially as an adult who has lived that way for years. But thanks to my insight and courage, I began unlearning and relearning at the age of 30; something many never get the chance to do.
My therapists gave me several ideas and methods to help me heal. But using pen and paper daily to track my emotions was difficult; I couldn’t even sit straight in bed. I searched online for digital tools to make emotion tracking easier on my phone or laptop. Sadly, I found nothing truly suitable.
Most apps were subscription-based, and I didn’t want to spend more while already paying for hospital treatment. The others weren’t adequate. Worse still, most app makers seemed focused on substituting humans with AI, rather than using AI to improve human experiences.
That disappointment became my motivation. It made me think of creating a platform where people could track their mental health safely, with the right support. That’s how Thought was born.
